Codec changes the math

H.265/HEVC and AV1 deliver similar perceived quality at lower bitrates than H.264—but decode support and encoding time differ. Compare at the same VMAF or SSIM score, not the same Mbps label.

Audio often gets overlooked

Stereo AAC at 128–192 kbps suits most speech and music. Surround or lossless stacks add megabytes fast on long podcasts. Budget audio kbps inside the total package bitrate.

Live versus VOD

Live streams need stable sustained bitrate with headroom for spikes; VOD can use two-pass encoding for efficiency. CDN bills on egress—tie bitrate estimates to monthly view forecasts.

FAQ

What is bitrate?
Data processed per second, usually in megabits per second (Mbps) for video streams or kilobits for audio. Higher bitrate generally means more detail—up to the limits of the source.
How much bitrate does 1080p need?
There is no single answer: talking-head H.264 might look fine at 3–5 Mbps; fast sports at 1080p60 often wants 8–12 Mbps or more. Codec efficiency matters as much as the number.
Does duration affect bitrate?
Bitrate is a rate, not a total. Duration multiplies into file size: roughly size (MB) ≈ bitrate (Mbps) × duration (seconds) ÷ 8, plus container overhead.
